Board Games Are Boring

While all entertainment is subjective, I’d venture to say board games are not boring at all, especially with the right people and the right game. Here’s why:

There are so many kinds of games that offer different gameplay experiences, including deduction, teamwork, hidden-traitors, bluffing, storytelling, real-time chaos, negotiation, charades, and more.
There are games for almost every personality type, including creative people, storytellers, introverts, extroverts, builders, problem-solvers
planners, risk-takers, team players, improvisers, negotiators, etc.
Many modern board games offer exhilarating gameplay experiences in a short amount of time that stimulates your brain in a way that makes you feel clever without mentally draining you.
Board games foster social interaction and fellowship in a way that other forms of entertainment don’t, providing an easy way for people to laugh, gasp, argue, and groan as a collective.
Unlike passive activities, board games create memorable experiences that are shaped by the decisions and actions made by you and your friends.
Modern board games are much more engaging and sophisticated than traditional mass-market games.
Board games are an interactive activity that demands everyone’s full attention and participation.
Board games can help strangers bond and connect much more easily by taking the pressure off of small talk and giving everyone a shared activity in which they can collaborate and discover each other’s personalities organically.

But most importantly, I enjoy the special moments they create among my friends and family. I enjoy the laughter they provoke, the rising tension they create, the table talk they foster, and the unexpected twists they reveal about one another.

Board Games Are a Waste Of Time

Board games provide many benefits: giving your eyes a break from digital screens, exercising your brain, and uplifting your mood through shared laughter with your friends and family. If you’re interested in fun ways to unwind from the daily grind, consider organizing a board game night.

Board Games Are Outdated

Board game standards have changed considerably over the last decade, and modern-day gamers expect sophisticated gameplay, well-written rulebooks, professional artwork, and quality components. Here are some examples of modern board game productions.

Board Games Don’t Explore My Hobbies

Long gone are the days of dull settings from mass-market games like Monopoly or Scrabble. Thanks to an increasing number of game designers with diverse backgrounds, there are now hundreds of board games with a variety of unique themes and settings. Don’t believe me? Let’s break it down.

Do you love psychology? There’s a game about Sigmund Freud’s theory of psychoanalysis
Are you fascinated by the women’s suffrage movement (the right to vote)? There’s a board game that recreates the battle between the suffragists and the opposition.
Do you like camping or visiting national parks? There’s a game about visiting national parks while managing your camping gear.
Are you a professional photographer? There’s a board game about taking pictures, literally and figuratively.
Like listening to rock and roll? Jackie Fox (the guitarist of The Runaways) made a game about aspiring musicians trying to become rock stars.
Do you like traveling and planning in advance? There’s a line of travel-themed games where players design itineraries that serve both as part of the game and as real-life travel plans.
Ever wanted to know what it’s like to be the president of the United States during a 4-year term? There’s a game for that too.

So, whatever it is you’re into, I’m confident there’s a board game out there for you. You just have to look.

Board Games Are Hard To Learn

Board game publishers are constantly finding ways to make gaming accessible, whether through high-quality rules videos, professional rulebooks, how-to-play booklets that walk you through the game step by step, or chapter-based challenges designed to introduce rules one level at a time. Whatever it may be, the reality is that board games are easier to learn now than ever before!

There are also a plethora of board games to choose from nowadays, each with varying levels of complexity. If you’re a casual gamer looking for something simple, then you’re in luck because there are hundreds of fantastic games just for you.

Board Games Are Expensive

While there are expensive board games, there are also inexpensive board games with fantastic artwork and components. Your average board game will cost you anywhere from 10 dollars to 50 dollars, and unlike one-off experiences like concerts or shows, most board games are infinitely replayable, giving you hundreds of hours of value for your money. When was the last time you went to a Kiss concert and had Gene Simmons show up at your house the next day to play you a comforting lullaby?

Board Games Are For Children

While board games are excellent tools for child development, they are not just for children. People of all ages and backgrounds play modern board games. If you attend a massive board game convention like Gen Con, you’ll find thousands of adults from all walks of life in attendance.

Board games have evolved tremendously in terms of gameplay sophistication, and modern gamers consider games like Candyland or Operation outdated and old-fashioned. So, while there are many board games for children, there are also plenty for adults.
